Upper Canada Mall and Athletes for Africa are harnessing the citywide fever around the upcoming 2010 FIFA World Cup by launching the Athletic Jersey Drive, a joint initiative that promotes global citizenship in York Region classrooms by challenging students to collect gently used athletic uniforms for youth in war-torn northern Uganda.

Nearly 700 jerseys have already been collected and more keep pouring in. One school, Dr. J.M Denison Secondary in Newmarket, donated a total of 423 uniforms on the first day of the campaign!

If your school wants to take part, gather gently used athletic jerseys of all types and drop them off at Guest Services at Upper Canada Mall. Each jersey collected earns your school 10 points. The school with the most points by June 10 will win a special appearance by Freestyle Soccer, a Toronto-based organization that performs awesome acrobatic and athletic tricks with a soccer ball.

A second phase of the Athletic Jersey Drive, which will include public donations, kicks off June 11. Stay tuned…
